I searched for this Sabatini book for years, but it was difficult to get and so I gave up hope. I have never read a book by Sabatini before (It is surprising because he has such a beautiful name – ‘Rafael’ which sounds similar to the name of Italian Renaissance painter ‘Raphael’, and ‘Sabatini’ which has a musical ring to it and is also the second name of one of my favourite tennis players of yesteryears, ‘Gabriela Sabatini’). I was very disappointed when I got to know that, but this revelation also piqued my curiosity. I discovered that it was based on an English novel ‘Captain Blood’ by Rafael Sabatini. Later, I discovered that this was not so. I thought that the movie was based on an original story and a screenplay, written especially for MGR. The movie was a big hit when it was released and has been popular among young movie goers for generations (I saw it a few decades after it was first released). Later, circumstances make him a pirate, albeit of the noble kind. He falls in love with the island chieftain’s daughter (played by Jayalalitha), but it is an impossible love between a slave and a princess. In the movie, MGR plays the role of a doctor living in a fictitious country and he is arrested for treason and deported to an island as a slave. It was a pirate movie starring two Tamil movie icons of yesteryears – MGR and Jayalalitha. One of my favourite movies when I was in school was a Tamil movie called ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ (‘One in a thousand’ – released in 1965).

The characterd in Jane Smiley's novellas, Ordinary Love & Good Will, (1989) include one primary protagonist in each novella, and several suporting ones. She is also the author of five works of nonfiction and a series of books for young adults. Jane Smiley is the author of numerous novels, including A Thousand Acres, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, and most recently, Golden Age, the concluding volume of The Last Hundred Years trilogy. The protagonist of Ordinary Love is Rachel Kinsella, a 52-year-old divorce and mother. As both stories unfold, Smiley gracefully raises the questions that confront all families with the characteristic style and insight that has marked all of her work. Jane Smiley's 1989 collection, Ordinary Love & Good Will merge the themes of family and decisions. Good Will portrays a father who realizes how his son has been affected by his decision to lead a counterculture life and move his family to a farm. In Ordinary Love, Smiley focuses on a woman's infidelity and the lasting, indelible effects it leaves on her children long after her departure. These exquisite twin novellas chronicle the difficult choices that reshape the lives of two very different families. He said in his speech at the Reichsparteitag in 1935, “He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future.” The fact that the Hitler Youth played such a crucial role in Hitler’s grand scheme for Nazi Germany indicates a disturbing manipulation of children’s brains, brains that were not yet fully developed, were incredibly susceptible to brainwashing, and were easily co-opted by a powerful authority figure. The Nazis had extremely ambitious objectives, including the firm belief that it was crucial to preserve the Aryan race by protecting it from what they deemed “undesirables.” Hitler knew that his success rested in large part on inculcating his German Nationalist principles and anti-Semitism into the minds of the youngest of German citizens. The Nazi Party, the German fascist political party led by authoritarian leader Adolf Hitler from 1920-1945, was especially notorious for its indoctrination of German youth in order to serve the ultimate goals of their regime. Throughout history, we find examples where children have been unwitting accomplices to the atrocities of cruel regimes. One of Brosh’s central subjects was - and still is - depression. She appears, at all ages, as a small creature with stick arms, a bright pink dress and a yellow ponytail. And often structurally ingenious: “Warning Signs,” a piece about digging up, in the backyard, a letter she wrote to her future self when she was 10, is addressed to other versions of her past self. Then there was her muscular storytelling, which, like her drawing, was economical and effective, hitting just the right beats, both funny and dark, introspective and observant. (I even bought the calendar.) A selection of Brosh’s autobiographical word-and-image stories from her blog of the same name (which she began in college while procrastinating for a final), “Hyperbole and a Half” made me laugh harder than anything I could remember.įirst there was her drawing style: a charming, stripped-down visual vocabulary accomplished entirely in the free software program Paintbrush, in which faces - of effervescently manic children, bewildered staring parents and various dogs - took center stage as vehicles of expression. I came late to Allie Brosh’s “Hyperbole and a Half” - later than the outspoken fan Bill Gates and numerous enthusiastic writers for Psychology Today - but when I fell, I fell hard.
